Benefits Enrollment Ends Oct. 31

Annual benefits enrollment runs through Oct. 31. There are a variety of ways to learn more about the enrollment process – including a video of the Top 10 things to know about this year’s enrollment process. Read more online.

Employee Appreciation Day Friday

Plan to join your colleagues for the 2013 Employee Appreciation Day on Friday, Oct. 18, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Student Union and the Pit. A variety of activities will be available to show how much the University appreciates the year-round efforts of staff and faculty! Read more online.

SPA Performance Management Pilot Completed

Last spring, the Office of Human Resources (OHR) conducted a pilot program for a new SPA performance management process. The pilot group included four campus units: the School of Government, the School of Pharmacy, Housekeeping Services, and OHR itself. SPA employees in these areas were evaluated for their 2013 annual performance appraisal using the proposed program. Further revisions to the program will be completed this fall, with a campus-wide roll-out slated for early winter. Read more online.

Carolina Cares, Carolina Shares Campaign Begins

Last year, Carolina employees proved that Tar Heels Give More by raising more than any other campaign for the State Employees’ Combined Campaign. The $894,533 given by the Carolina community in 2012 provided crucial services and assistance for those in need.  Now, it’s time for Tar Heels to show we can do it again, by striving to reach our million-dollar goal for this year’s campaign. HR Transformation Focuses on Community-Building, Training

In July, the Carolina HR community changed the way services are delivered on campus, elevating most human resources personnel to the school/division office. This will allow us to maintain a decentralized approach to HR service delivery — but one that is less broadly distributed within departments than previously existed. We believe this model will provide a more responsive, effective and consistent approach to providing services at the school/division level. With this change, we are also working to create an HR professional community on campus, focused on our mutual goals of excellent service and consistent compliance with applicable laws, regulations and policies. Read more online.

"Peer to Manager" Class Helps with Adjustment

It’s easy to assume that moving from a peer in a workgroup to managing that workgroup is a quick learning curve. After all, you know all about the work unit. However, the reality can be far different.  Getting to know the team and learning to manage others is hard to do as an outsider, but managing your former peers requires more “unlearning” on everyone’s part.
