Leadership Certificate Track

CONTENTS

Overview

The Leadership Certificate Track is for University employees who are interested in sharpening their leadership skills as well as learning to identify and take advantage of opportunities to lead. Participants in this learning track will gain a clear understanding of the differences between leadership and management, learn how to gain enthusiastic followers, clarify expectations, influence people, make decisions effectively, build and maintain relationships and trust and communicate across differences. This track consists of six core classes and three electives. Participants who apply to the track must complete all coursework within three years of their application date.

To begin this track, complete the enrollment form located at the bottom of this page. Please begin enrolling in your courses at any time at www.training.unc.edu. Participants enrolled in certificate tracks will be updated about any changes and upcoming classes that may help fulfill their requirements.


Core Courses

Participants in the Leadership certificate track are asked to complete the following six core classes. These classes were selected to be a part of the core curriculum for their diversity of topic, ranging from the fundamentals of leadership to more specialized skills one will need in order to be an engaged, self-aware and effective leader. Courses may be taken in any order. All courses are offered annually but may not be offered on every program guide.

  • Developing Management/Leadership Potential
  • Diversity in the Workplace -or- Diversity in the Workplace for Supervisors (choose either course)
  • Effective Decision-Making
  • Foundations of High-Performing Teams
  • Influencing and Negotiating Effectively
  • MBTI & Leadership

Electives

In addition to the six core courses, participants are asked to choose three electives from the Training & Development Program Guide to complete their certificate track. With the electives, participants are able to tailor learning to best meet the needs of their particular interests and situations. Courses that will count toward the Leadership Certificate Track electives include, but are not limited to, the items listed below. If you would like to see if a course on the Program Guide that is not listed below would fulfill the elective requirement in this certificate, please contact the Leadership Certificate Track advisor.

  • Building Rapport
  • Coaching Skills 101
  • Developing Your Identity as a Leader
  • Leading in an Academic Setting
  • Running Effective Meetings or Leading Effective Meetings
  • Valuable Presentation Skills
