Supervisory/Management Certificate Track

CONTENTS

Overview

The Supervisory/Management Certificate Track is designed for managers and supervisors who desire to gain a clear understanding of University operations and resources, learn how to apply the University's policies and procedures, create a team-oriented culture among their staff, acquire the skills to motivate and coach employees, increase self-awareness and gain an understanding of one's management and supervisory style. This track consists of six core classes and three electives. Participants who apply to the track must complete all coursework within three years of their application date.

To begin this track, complete the enrollment form located at the bottom of this page. Please begin enrolling in your courses at any time at www.training.unc.edu. Participants enrolled in certificate tracks will be updated about any changes and upcoming classes that may help fulfill their requirements.


Core Courses

Participants in the Supervisory/Management certificate track are asked to complete the following six core classes. These classes were selected to be a part of the core curriculum for their diversity of topic, ranging from the foundations of supervision and management to more specialized skills needed to be a knowledgeable and high-performing manager or supervisor within the University or beyond. Courses may be taken in any order. All courses are offered annually but may not be offered on every program guide

  • Developing Management/Leadership Potential
  • EEOI
  • Financial Systems at UNC-Chapel Hill (contact Finance Division to enroll)
  • Interaction Management
  • Interviewing Skills for Supervisors
  • Supervisory Resources Training (SRT) -or- EPA Management Basics* (choose either course)

*Policies and procedures relevant to SPA employees are covered in SRT. Policies and procedures relevant to EPA employees are covered in EPA Management Basics.


Electives

In addition to the six core courses, participants are asked to choose three electives from the Training & Development Program Guide to complete their certificate track. With the electives, participants are able to tailor learning to best meet the needs of their particular interests and situations. Courses that will count toward the Supervisory/Management Track electives include, but are not limited to, the items listed below. If you would like to see if a course on the Program Guide that is not listed below would fulfill the elective requirement in this certificate, please contact the Supervisory/Management Certificate Track advisor.

  • It Takes All Types: An Introduction to the MBTI
  • Determining Cause for Disciplinary Actions
  • Layoff: Making the Appropriate Decision
  • MBTI & Leadership
  • Providing Effective Feedback
  • Conflict Management for the Workplace
  • Running Effective Meetings or Leading Effective Meetings
  • To Coach or To Manage
  • Valuable Presentation Skills
