Supervisory & Managerial Curriculum

CONTENTS

Purpose

Training and Development offers many options for supervisors and managers to learn new skills or to develop existing skills. New supervisors are encouraged to start with a suggested sequence of courses. For more experienced supervisors and managers, there are many courses focusing on areas such as interpersonal competencies, organizational development, and performance management.

Cost

Unless otherwise noted, Training & Development provides these programs at no additional cost to individuals or departments.

Required Training

Equal Employment Opportunity Institute: All new supervisors must attend Equal Employment Opportunity Institute (EEOI) training within the first year of becoming a supervisor. This training is offered by the Office of State Personnel and addresses EEO law compliance and workplace diversity in state government. The program focuses on developing awareness and building skills to use on the job. All new supervisors are required to attend within one year of becoming a supervisor. NOTE: Although you are required to attend EEOI, you do not need to complete this program prior to attending other training programs. To register or for more information, please contact the campus EEO/ADA Office at 966-3576.

Programs for New Managers & Supervisors

Suggested courses for new supervisors include:

Managing Interactions with Your Employees - a behavioral modeling course for supervisors and managers to learn key principles for building commitment, facilitating improved performance, and following up to improve performance. (12 hours)

It Takes All Types: Understanding Your Myers-Briggs (MBTI) Personality Type - an interactive course that examines why others behave the way they do and why you are the person you are. The Myers-Briggs instrument reports your indicated preferences, and the information is used to help gain insight into your personality type. (4 hours)

Refer to the Office of Human Resources Course Catalog for a schedule of current programs.

Additional Programs for Managers & Supervisors

There are a wide variety of courses available. Please see the current Course Catalog for a complete listing.

Programs for Experienced Managers & Supervisors

Training & Development offers the University Management Development Program (UMDP), a multiple-module, 12-month program for UNC-Chapel Hill and NC Central University managers and supervisors. Participants are selected through a University-wide nomination process.

The objectives of UMDP are to:

  1. Expand participants' knowledge, skills, and abilities - critical needs in a changing University environment (through a range of experiential and classroom sessions).
  2. Increase awareness of professional strengths and developmental needs (through assessments and coaching).
  3. Network with other UNC and NC Central leaders - strengthen capabilities and provide ongoing feedback and support systems (through small group exercises, breakout sessions, and peer coaching).

The program includes five "core" sessions, use of a multi-rater instrument, an individual coaching session, participation in two to four elective programs, and regular peer coaching sessions.
