Minimum Faculty Credentialing Requirements for Instruction of Academic Credit Courses

The following are general credentialing guidelines for faculty who will instruct credit courses in accord with the University's accreditation requirements. Questions regarding appropriate credentials for specific academic courses should be directed to the Chair of the academic department relevant to the course subject matter.

Examples

Undergraduate (lower or upper level)

Doctorate or master's degree with major in the teaching discipline.PhD or MA in History teaching history courses.
Doctorate or master's degree with major related to the teaching discipline.PhD or MA in Political Science teaching African and Afro-American Studies.
Doctorate or Master's degree in any major but with at least 18 graduate semester hours earned in the teaching discipline.MS in Chemistry teaching Biology.
If instructor has none of the above, strong evidence of competency in the teaching area must be provided.

(1) BA in English teaching creative writing courses.

(2) MS in Anthropology teaching Spanish I.

Post Baccalaureate Graduate, Professional CoursesEarned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline.

(1) MFA in Dramatic Art teaching theatre studies.

(2) DDS and MS in Orthodontia teaching orthodontics.

Earned doctorate or terminal degree in a related teaching discipline.PhD in Linguistics teaching German language/literature.
If instructor does not have an earned  doctorate or terminal degree, strong evidence of competency in the teaching area must be provided.

(1) BS in Computer Science teaching software design course.

(2) MA in Communications teaching journalism course.
