Guidelines for Faculty Appointments at the William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education

CONTENTS

Overview

These guidelines set forth specific credentialing and appointment requirements for faculty assignments for UNC-CH courses granting academic credit offered through the William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education (CE). Such courses include:

  • Carolina Courses Online
  • Self-paced Courses (Correspondence and Online)
  • Part Time Classroom Studies
  • Outreach Instruction to Inmates

In general, all individuals performing such duties must meet the minimum credentialing requirements of our accrediting agency, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

Basic Requirements for CE Faculty Appointments

In order to be instructor of record or award grades, the employee must have an academic appointment in the appropriate rank and academic department in order to teach through one of the Friday Center CE programs.

Appointment Details for Current UNC-CH Faculty Members

If a proposed CE employee has a current academic appointment at UNC-CH, this individual only needs the addition of an EPA Non-Faculty appointment rank using rank code 19 (Other) to reflect their added status as a Continuing Education Specialist.

The current base department of the individual may use the EPAWeb invitation feature to allow CE to process a secondary appointment action to add the non-faculty rank or the base department may do this directly in EPAWeb at their option. This added non-faculty appointment is required to designate that the instructional activity is related to a course offered by CE.

If the current academic appointment is full-time, then payments received by the employee from CE may not exceed the annual overload policy limit for this individual.

Appointment Details for Individuals Not Presently Holding Faculty Rank

Persons other than regular members of the UNC-CH faculty may be appointed as Lecturers (assuming they have the appropriate academic degree) if their only
responsibility is teaching CE course(s). Other titles, such as Adjunct Associate Professor may be appropriate for retired faculty. These appointments may be made for up to five years and do not carry any salary other than that paid by CE.

Occasionally, CE faculty may also be appointed as visiting members of the faculty with rank designations prefixed by the word "Visiting" if they hold faculty credentials at another institution or under special circumstances if someone with appropriate credentials may only be teaching at CE for a very limited duration of time (e.g., less than 6 months in duration) and the assignment of other faculty ranks is not deemed appropriate. Visiting appointments generally are not appropriate for faculty teaching self-paced courses since those courses typically require a longer term commitment. All CE-related visiting appointments shall be made consistent with our overall guidelines for visiting faculty members.

As with CE appointments for existing faculty members, once the faculty rank is established within a base academic department, CE or the base department must add an EPA Non-Faculty appointment using rank code 19 (Other) to reflect their added status as a Continuing Education Specialist.

Processing Secondary CE Appointments in EPAWeb

The EPAWeb external department invitation feature does not extend access for Reappointment actions, so the academic base department for the employee will need to complete any necessary EPAWeb actions to implement a CE appointment when a secondary appointment action is not used. When the action is completed in EPAWeb, CE will have access to the employee's record in EPAWeb and will be able to perform any future actions without further invitation.

Paperwork Requirements for All CE Faculty Appointments

Paperwork for any faculty appointments created specifically for work to be performed in CE is identical to the "standard order" requirements for other faculty appointments in the relevant academic department/ school in which the appointment is based.
