State Health Plan of North Carolina

The State Health Plan (SHP) offers three health plan options. The newest health plan option is a Consumer Directed Health Plan (CDHP) with a state-funded Health Reimbursement Account. The PPO 80/20 has been improved and is named the “Enhanced 80/20 PPO Plan”, while the Basic 70/30 plan changed its name to the Traditional 70/30 plan and no plan features or benefits were changed for the plan year.

High Deductible Health Plan

UNC Chapel Hill offers enrollment for the High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) through the State of North Carolina Health Plan. Temporary employees will receive an email notification from the Benefits Office alerting them of their eligibility for participation in the HDHP. A signed waiver/declination form is required if eligible temporary employees decides he/she does not want to enroll for HDHP health care benefits.

For more information or if you are interested in applying for this coverage, please contact the Benefits Office at 919-843-8000 or benefits@unc.edu for further instructions.

Postdoc Medical Insurance Plan

The Postdoc Medical Insurance Plan is administered by Hill, Chesson and Woody and is underwritten by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. A waiver form must be signed if the postdoctoral scholar decides he/she does not want to enroll for health coverage benefits.

Eligible Post-docs must be classified as rank code 27 or 28 and temporary full-time in ConnectCarolina. Monthly health insurance premiums for individual Post-docs are covered by the institution (dept. or funding source), NOT by the Postdoc.
