Overview of Job Types at Carolina
The two major groups of employment at the University are referred to as “SHRA” and “EHRA.”
·SHRA positions are governed by the provisions of the State Human Resources Act (SHRA) of North Carolina. This includes most staff positions.
·EHRA positions are Exempt from the provisions of the State Human Resources Act of North Carolina. This includes all faculty and most research, instructional and senior administrative positions.
Permanent part-time SHRA and EHRA employees working 20 to 29 hours per week are eligible for all benefit programs, except mandatory retirement and the State 401(k) plan. The employee must pay the full cost of health coverage.
Permanent full-time SHRA and EHRA employees working 30 or more hours per week are eligible for all benefits.
In benefit programs that provide coverage for your dependents, the rules are as follows:
·Dependent children are eligible for coverage up to age 26 as long as they’re not eligible for their own or their spouse’s employer sponsored health coverage or enlisted in the military.
·Domestic partner coverage is available for three programs provided by the University: AD&D Insurance (Reliance Standard), Group Term Life (MetLife) and Dental Insurance (United Concordia Dental).
·Spouse (including same sex spouse) is eligible for coverage under all benefit programs that provide spouse coverage.
When Coverage Begins
Coverage for most benefit programs begins the first of the month following your hire date/ appointment date or change in family status. Permanent full-time employees who are required to participate in a retirement program begin participation consistent with your hire/appointment date.
