Ackland Art Museum

The view is always changing at The Ackland, the University’s on-campus art museum since 1958. The Ackland organizes more than a dozen special collections each year. On a normal day, the museum houses more than 15,000 works of art featuring North Carolina’s premier collections of Asian art and works of art on paper – drawings, prints and photographs, plus significant collections of European masterworks, 20thcentury and contemporary art, African art and North Carolina pottery. It’s a great place to wander during a lunch break or bring the family one evening or over the weekend.

Athletics Events

UNC Faculty/Staff & UNC Healthcare employees get in FREE to all UNC Olympic athletic events, excluding Football & Men’s Basketball by showing their UNC OneCard or UNC Hospitals ID, up to 4 tickets based on availability. Carolina Performing Arts

Memorial Hall is the setting for a variety of spectacular performances by both local and world-renowned artists. Located in the heart of campus and a short walk from a range of campus and Franklin Street dining destinations, people from across campus and around the state make Memorial’s recently renovated splendor a favorite destination for the best in live music, dance and theatre. Recent years have featured performances by everyone from Bonnie Raitt and Lyle Lovett, the Neville Brothers and the Cleveland Orchestra, to the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre, the North Carolina Ballet, Branford and Wynton Marsalis, Tony Bennett and the Bolshoi Ballet. Faculty and staff can purchase series packages at a 20% discount. A valid UNC OneCard must be presented at the Box Office of Memorial Hall to receive the faculty & staff discount.

Instrumental and Choral Music

The department of music at Carolina offers about 150 concerts and related events each year, many of them with free admission. Annual highlights include the Carolina Jazz Fest, Festival on the Hill, Carolina Symposia in Music and an array of master classes with visiting artists. Treat yourself!

North Carolina Botanical Garden

The North Carolina Botanical Garden is a regional research center for the conservation and interpretation of plants, particularly those native to the Southeastern United States. The Coker Arboretum, the William Hunt Arboretum, the Coker Pinetum and the Mason Farm Biological Reserve are included in the Garden’s nearly 600 acres. A nearly 30,000 square foot green education center was dedicated on October 12, 2009 – University Day – expanding the offerings to visitors of all ages. The botanical garden is located on a plot just off NC Highway 15-501. Coker Arboretum and the Coker Pinetum are right on campus; great spots for a cobweb-clearing mid-day stroll or closer examination with family on off-hours.

PlayMakers Repertory Company

PlayMakers Repertory Company, the Carolinas’ premier theatre company, presents a mix of both classical and contemporary plays in the Paul Green Theatre on campus each year, showcasing the talents of students, faculty and staff alongside visiting members of the larger theatre community. PlayMakers is the state’s only full-seasoned not-for-profit resident professional theatre. It is a program of the University’s department of dramatic art based in the Center for Dramatic Art, located on Country Club Road near its intersection with Raleigh Road. The facility features the 500-seat Paul Green Theatre and 265-seat Elizabeth Price Kenan Theatre. Faculty & staff get a 10% discount off the full price of single tickets (not valid for Tuesday Community Nights or Opening Nights). You UNC OneCard is required at the time of purchase.
