Life Insurance and Income/Asset Protection
A variety of insurance options are available to protect faculty, staff, their domestic partners and their dependents.
Group Term Life Insurance
The University offers employees a choice of group term life insurance programs (MetLife or ING). Both programs offer you the flexibility to change your level of coverage as your needs change. Your spouse, domestic partner and dependent children are also eligible for coverage at group rates under the MetLife program.
Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance (AD&D)
The University offers employee a choice of AD&D programs (Reliance Standard or Unum). Both programs offer you the flexibility to change your level of coverage as your needs change. Your spouse, domestic partner and dependent children are also eligible for coverage at group rates under the Reliance Standard program. Unum only provides coverage for your spouse and dependent children.
Disability Insurance
The University provides disability benefits under the Disability Income Plan of North Carolina (DIP-NC). Benefits are available to eligible employees who become continuously unable to perform the duties of their usual occupation due to a mental or physical incapacity while actively employed. DIP-NC consists of Short-term Disability and Long-term Disability benefits. The University also provides Supplemental Disability programs though Liberty Mutual for employees enrolled in the Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System and through The Standard for employees enrolled in the Optional Retirement Program.
Long-Term Care Insurance
Long-term care is extended care you would receive at home, in an assisted living or nursing facility, adult day care or hospice.
Home & Auto Insurance
The program offers you and any member of your household homeowners, auto, boat and umbrella insurance coverage at competitive rates and with convenient payroll deduction.
Excess Liability Insurance
The Defense of State Employees Act (N.C.G.S. §143-291) provides coverage up to $500,000 for injury or property damage to others caused by the negligent acts of State employees acting in the scope of their employment.
Workers' Compensation
The Workers' Compensation program provides benefits to any employee who suffers disability through accident or occupational disease arising out of, and in the course of, his or her employment, according to the provisions of the North Carolina Workers' Compensation Act. This act applies to all University employees, whether full-time, part-time or temporary.
Emergency Loan Program
Under the program, emergency loans could be granted to an eligible employee for reasons of a severe financial hardship for which the employee has an immediate need for financial assistance.
