General Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
EPA non-faculty positions qualifying for designation as "Instructional" are characterized by the following:
- The duties must be associated with regular academic and educational experiences provided by the university, or are uniquely supportive of those academic and educational experiences, and must involve significant and independent interaction with participants in the University's instructional and educational program.
- The position must require that a substantial proportion of the work commitment be devoted to instructional activities or to the direction of educational/academic supportive activities.
- The position requires the exercise of discretion in determining the nature and content of the instructional or educational activities assigned and evaluating their effectiveness.
Listed below are the various individual sub-categories of instructional positions and thier respective specific criteria.

Academic Advising
Criteria: Positions whose primary purpose is to advise students on academic matters such as selection of a major area of study, course selection, and academic performance.
Minimum Education and Experience: Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required; for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities related to the delivery of student advising and counseling or student personnel services, will accept a relevant undergraduate degree and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.

Academic Preparation and Enhancement
Criteria: Positions whose primary purpose is to improve academic preparation through such means as tutoring and supplemental instruction or to direct programs designed to enhance the educational experience of enrolled students or of targeted secondary school students to help prepare them for post-secondary education.
Minimum Education and Experience: Post-Baccalaureate degree required; for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities related to tutoring, supplemental instruction, or direction of programs that enhance educational experiences of enrolled or prospective students, will accept a relevant undergraduate degree and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.

Academic Standards
Criteria: Positions whose primary purpose is to develop and/or administer academic standards and curricula for degree granting programs.
Minimum Education and Experience: Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required; for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities related to the development or administration of academic standards or curricula, will accept a relevant undergraduate degree and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.

Coaching
Criteria: Positions whose primary purpose is to coach student athletes for teams sponsored by the institution. Note: Positions must be actively engaged in coaching students. This does not include positions ancillary to an athletic program.
Minimum Education and Experience: Minimum of a bachelor's degree required with experience in relevant independent instructional or educational activities; specific minimum experience is at the discretion of the Director of Athletics.

Continuing Education
Criteria: Positions whose primary purpose is to design and deliver courses, seminars, etc., extending the benefit of the institution's regular academic and research activities to participants.
Minimum Education and Experience: Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required; for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities relevant to the teaching assignment, will accept a relevant undergraduate degree and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. In addition, the position minimums should satisfy any accreditation requirements in the specified area of instruction.

Co-Operative Education
Criteria: Positions whose primary purpose is to develop co-operative education experiences for students with employers, monitoring progress, and evaluating student performance with direct impact on grade assignment.
Minimum Education and Experience: Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required; for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities related to mentoring or advising students or otherwise developing or delivering student experiential learning such as Co-Op education programs, will accept a relevant undergraduate degree and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.

Counselors
(credentialed mental health professionals only serving students)
Criteria: Positions requiring credentialed professionals whose primary purpose is to: provide clinical and developmental counseling or psychological services to students to enhance their psychological growth, emotional well-being, and learning potential; and, advise academic and academic support program directors of special needs, trends, and suggested program revisions based on the interaction with the student population.
Minimum Education and Experience: Relevant professional and educational credentials and licensure (when applicable) in the clinical field of psychological or mental health practice as deemed appropriate by the hiring Department Head.

Instructing
Criteria: Positions whose primary purpose is to determine course content, teach and evaluate enrolled students in courses for academic credit. These positions include Lecturers and other teaching positions that may be funded in codes other than 1310.
Minimum Education and Experience: Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required; for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities related to teaching, will accept a relevant undergraduate degree and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. In addition, the position minimums should satisfy any accreditation requirements in the specified area of instruction.

Instructional Consulting
Criteria: Positions whose primary purpose is to assist, advise, and critique faculty and other instructional staff on instructional matters such as course content, curriculum structure, and instructional technique.
Minimum Education and Experience: Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required; for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities related to consulting or developing course content, curriculum, or instructional technique, will accept a relevant undergraduate degree and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.

Instructional Technology
Criteria: Positions whose primary purpose is to utilize a variety of telecommunications and/or advance media-based technology to plan, design, and administer distance education curricula and/or programs in support of instructional and research activities that are directly related to the institution's academic mission. Note: This sub-category does not include those involved in routine computing operations, maintenance, or network support.
Minimum Education and Experience: Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required; for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities related to instructional technology and/or distance education design, development, or implementation, will accept a relevant undergraduate degree and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.

|
Laboratory Management
Criteria: Positions whose primary purpose is to manage practical experience and research laboratories and that participate in selection of experiments, protocols, and procedures which best support the instructional or research goals and in evaluating progress towards goals.
Minimum Education and Experience: Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required; for candidates demonstrating comparable independent instructional or educational activities related to laboratory management or practice, will accept a relevant undergraduate degree and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.

Professional Librarians
Criteria: Positions whose primary purpose is to support instructional and research activities by advising students and faculty on the selection and effective use of library resource materials and by working with faculty on instructional and research matters such as collection development. Note: Individuals qualifying for this category generally have the Master of Library Science degree and qualify as professional librarians.
Minimum Education and Experience: Minimum of an ALA accredited masters degree in Library Science (MLS); in instances where the Library is proposing a position that will manage a specialized, subject matter-specific collection, an alternative advanced degree may be proposed in lieu of the MLS when the degree is directly related to the collection to be managed and the individual otherwise demonstrates the competencies and qualifications otherwise expected of a professional librarian. Specific experience requirements are at the discretion of the applicable Library Director based on hiring market conditions and accepted professional standards of practice within the field. Note: The above is an interim set of minimum requirements as permanent requirements for this category are under review by UNC General Administration and subject to change.

Student Support Services
Criteria: Position whose primary purpose is to develop, direct and administer services for students and/or faculty that have a direct impact on the quality of students' educational experiences and are directly linked to the institution's academic programs. These positions include professional staff that design and deliver programs and/or seminars that involve direct student interaction with students and enhance the overall academic and learning experience outside the formal classroom setting. Note: These positions do not include operational or facility maintenance functions.
Minimum Education and Experience: Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required; for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities associated with the delivery and/or management of student support functions, will accept a relevant undergraduate degree and relevant experience in substitution. Specific minimum experience requirements are at the discretion of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs or the Department Head in other units that may employ such positions based on accepted professional standards of practice within the field.
