UNC-Chapel Hill offers the Welcome to Carolina orientation program for new permanent EHRA Non-Faculty employees. The classroom-based orientation provides an overview of the programs, services, policies and benefits offered by the University. EHRA Non-Faculty employees must attend a Welcome to Carolina session within 30 days of beginning work.
Orienting a New Employee to the University
A comprehensive and well-designed orientation is essential because it lays a foundation for the new employee’s entire career with the University. Orientation informs new employees about the University’s culture, mission, policies and procedures, provides them with concise and accurate information to make them more comfortable in the job, encourages confidence and helps them quickly adapt to the job. Orientation also develops realistic job expectations, positive attitudes and job satisfaction. Without an orientation, new employees sometimes feel uncomfortable in their new positions and take longer to reach full potential.
The Office of Human Resources, supervisors, departmental contacts and others are responsible for orienting the new employee to the organization.
Orientation is important because it does the following:
- Provides new employees with concise and accurate information to make them more comfortable in the job
- Encourages employee confidence and helps the new employee adapt faster to the job
- Contributes to a more effective, productive workforce
- Improves employee retention
- Promotes communication between the supervisor and the new employee
New employees must be clear about their responsibilities at the University and given the tools needed to be successful in their jobs. A good orientation program takes time and effort, yet it is an important investment for hiring departments, new employees and the University.
The Orientation Checklist for New Employees and Orientation Checklist for Supervisors are intended to assist the department’s orientation efforts by highlighting the advantages and suggested content of a comprehensive orientation program.
Attendance at the Welcome to Carolina orientation program is required for all new permanent EHRA Non-Faculty employees within 30 days of the date of hire. Sessions are held every other Monday (or alternate day when the University is closed for a holiday). See below for registration instructions.
