New Employee Orientation Program – SHRA Permanent Employees

UNC-Chapel Hill offers the Welcome to Carolina orientation program for new SHRA permanent employees. The classroom-based orientation provides an overview of the programs, services, policies and benefits offered by the University. Employees must attend a Welcome to Carolina session before beginning work.

Orienting a New Employee to the University

Orientation is important because it lays a foundation for the new employee’s entire career with the University. First impressions are important, since they establish the basis for everything that follows. Without an orientation, new employees sometimes feel uncomfortable in their new positions and take longer to reach full potential.

The Office of Human Resources, supervisors, departmental contacts and others are responsible for orienting the new employee to the organization.

Orientation is important because it does the following:

  • Provides new employees with concise and accurate information to make them more comfortable in the job
  • Encourages employee confidence and helps the new employee adapt faster to the job
  • Contributes to a more effective, productive workforce
  • Improves employee retention
  • Promotes communication between the supervisor and the new employee

New employees must be clear about their responsibilities at the University and given the tools needed to be successful in their jobs. A good orientation program takes time and effort, yet it is an important investment for hiring departments, new employees and the University.

The Orientation Checklist for New Employees and Orientation Checklist for Supervisors provided below are intended to assist the department’s orientation efforts by highlighting the advantages and suggested content of a comprehensive orientation program.

Welcome to Carolina Orientation Program

Attendance at the Welcome to Carolina orientation program is mandatory for all new SHRA Permanent employees. Registration for the program is completed by the Employment Consultant or decentralized department representative at the time of the job offer. Sessions are held every Monday (or alternate day when the University is closed for a holiday).
