Employee Assistance Fund
In March 2009, Chancellor Holden Thorp authorized the creation of the Employee Assistance Fund. The fund is designed to serve two purposes: to provide enhanced career transition services for employees who are laid off or whose appointments are ending, and to expand the support already offered by the University's Employee Assistance Program, which gives employees a confidential place to go for help with stress or other challenges -- either at home or in the workplace. The fund totals $445,000, which will be used to support the following services:
Career Transition Services
The University offers career transition services at no charge to departments or employees through a partnership with Lee Hecht Harrison in Raleigh. The one-on-one coaching sessions provided to employees under this existing program are being expanded using the Employee Assistance Fund in order to better equip employees to respond to a job loss situation given current economic conditions and the challenges of obtaining new employment. Eligibility for this program is also being expanded in light of the budgetary challenges faced by the University and its impact on our employees.
With the added support of the Employee Assistance Fund, career transition counseling services are offered to all SPA and EPA non-faculty employees whose employment is ended due to a loss of funds, with the exception of EPA non-faculty employees whose appointment includes a funding contingency and are being separated due to the end of a contract or grant. In the latter cases, the department still has the option to pay for these services at its own expense. For additional information on career transition services from Lee Hecht Harrison, click here.
Employee Assistance Program
The University offers an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to help all employees resolve personal problems that may adversely affect job performance as well as dealing with the stress and adjustment caused by an unexpected job loss. Through the Employee Assistance Fund, the EAP program is currently being expanded both in terms of the number of employees who can simultaneously be served and the breadth of counseling services that can be offered.
The Employee Assistance Program is available to any employee, whether probationary, permanent, temporary, or retired, and is completely confidential. For additional information on the EAP, click here.
