See the information below about education scholarships, college savings programs and other education benefits available to eligible Carolina employees.
Scholarships
The Employee, Spouse, and Dependent Undergraduate Scholarship program provides needs-based financial assistance to eligible employees and their spouses and dependents pursuing an undergraduate degree at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Eligibility
- Permanent SHRA, EHRA Non-Faculty and Faculty employees working full-time or part-time (20 hours or more per week) with a minimum of one-year continuous service.
- Spouse of an eligible employee.
- Dependent child of an eligible employee.
Amount
- Covers in-state tuition and required fees for up to 12 hours of courses taken by the student.
- For applicants who are employees or the spouse of an employee: Scholarship factors in any amount covered by the University’s tuition and/or student fees waiver programs, as applicable.
Application process
- Email completed form as a pdf to the OHR Benefits team at benefits@unc.edu before the first day of class for the corresponding academic semester.

The Carolina Family Scholarship fund provides need-based scholarships to the children of employees attending any of the UNC System schools or community colleges in North Carolina. This scholarship is administered through the Employee Forum rather than through individual departments or the Office of Human Resources.
Eligibility
- Dependent children of UNC-Chapel Hill permanent employees who currently work at least 30 hours per week.
- Employee and/or spouse of employee NOT eligible for this scholarship.
Amount
- Amount of awards varies according to fund availability.
Application process
- Applicants may apply for the Carolina Family Scholarship at any point during the scholarship’s annual open window for applications, which is typically April 15 through June 15.

Additional Resources
College Foundation of North Carolina provides residents of any state with a means of investing funds to pay qualified higher education expenses of designated beneficiaries on a flexible basis. Participants choose how much to contribute and determine the investment direction of those funds. The code for UNC is 01207.
