Updating Your Benefits

You make changes to your benefits information online in ConnectCarolina Self Service. Some changes, like updating your name and address or designating your beneficiaries, can be done anytime. Other changes, like adding new plan coverage or selecting a different health plan, can only be made during the annual open enrollment period or within the first 30 days of a life event such as a change in your employment or marital status. Click the topics below for instructions on each topic.

How do I add a life event?

You can add a life event via ConnectCarolina Self Service any time during the year.

Major life changes that qualify for a change in benefits plan coverage are called life events. Typically, Carolina staff and faculty can only make changes to their benefits coverage during the annual open enrollment period in October. However, with a qualifying life event, employees can update their benefits coverage within 30 days of the qualifying life event. Learn more about qualifying life events.

With a life event, you will update your benefits coverage in ConnectCarolina using the two enrollment portals (these are the same portals you use each year during open enrollment):

  • State Enrollment Portal for health insurance with the State Health Plan.
  • UNC System Enrollment Portal for all other insurance and illness plans.

The process of updating your benefits coverage in the two portals in ConnectCarolina is called adding a life event.

Please note!
You will need to add a life event and to provide documentation of that life event before you are able to add a dependent to your insurance coverage. See instructions for how to upload benefits documentation.
Use the State Enrollment Portal in ConnectCarolina Self Service to make changes to your health insurance coverage with the State Health Plan.

  1. Log in to ConnectCarolina Self Service with your Onyen and password and DUO verification.
  2. Click the My Benefits tile.
  3. Click Benefits Enrollment from left menu.
  4. Select State Enrollment Portal from left drop-down menu.
  5. Click the Get Started button in the Have you experienced a life change that requires you to edit your benefits? section.
  6. On the next page, use the drop-down menu to select your life event.
  7. Enter the date of the life event in the Enter the date of this life event field.
    • For example, for the life event of loss of other coverage, enter the date the coverage ends.
    • For the life event of Now eligible for other coverage, enter the date the new coverage starts.
    • For the life event of a Birth, enter the date of birth.
  8. Click the Next button.
  9. The next screen will list your dependents.
    • To add a new dependent:
      1. Click the Create dependent profile button.
      2. Enter profile information, including Social Security Number and date of birth.
  10. The next page shows the dependents covered by your plan.
    • To add a dependent:
      1. Click the + Add button in the Update your Medical coverage section.
      2. Be sure the box beside the dependent’s name is checked.
    • To remove a dependent:
      1. In the Update your Medical coverage section, click to uncheck the box beside the name of the dependent.
  11. You are required to submit documentation for life events.
  12. Click the Save changes button.
  13. In the Document Center, click the New document button.
  14. To add an attachment, drag file to center of page or click the + circle button and follow prompts to select file.
  15. Once the document loads, the file name will appear, indicating the file was accepted.
  16. Type the name of the document (ex: copy of marriage certificate) into the Document Name field.
  17. Click the drop-down arrow beside the Type of Document box to choose Dependent Document as the document type.
  18. Click Save Document button.

You can also call the State’s Enrollment Center at 1-855-859-0966 to add the life event over the phone.

Use the UNC System Enrollment Portal in ConnectCarolina Self Service to make changes to your all insurance and illness plans EXCEPT for health insurance with the State Health Plan.

  1. Log in to ConnectCarolina Self Service with your Onyen and password and DUO verification.
  2. Click the My Benefits tile.
  3. Click Benefits Enrollment from left menu.
  4. Select UNC System Enrollment Portal from left drop-down menu.
  5. Click the CHANGE YOUR CURRENT BENEFITS button.
  6. On the Family Status Change page, select your life event.
  7. Click the Save and Continue button.
  8. On the next page, enter your event date.
    • For example, for the life event of Loss of other coverage, enter the date the coverage ends.
    • For the life event of Now eligible for other coverage, enter the date the new coverage starts.
    • For the life event of a Birth, enter the date of birth.
  9. Click the eligibility requirements box.
  10. Click the Save and Continue button.
  11. On the next pages, you will enter the dependent profile information and make your benefit coverage changes.
  12. Make sure to save changes through the rest of the selection process.

 


How do I upload my benefits documentation?

You can upload Benefits documentation via ConnectCarolina Self Service any time during the year.

You will need to upload documentation for life events and dependent verification for your legal dependent/s.

  • Log in to ConnectCarolina Self Service with your Onyen and password and DUO verification.
  • Click My Benefits
  • Click Benefits Enrollment
  • Select State Enrollment Portal from left drop-down menu.
  • The ebenefitsnow State Health Plan website will open.
  • Click Document Center from the left side menu under My Documents.
  • Click the + New Document button.
  • To add attachment, drag file to center of page or click the + circle button and follow prompts to select file.
  • Once the document loads, the file name will appear, indicating the file was accepted.
  • Type the name of the document (ex: copy of marriage certificate) into the Document Name field.
  • Click the drop-down arrow beside the Type of Document box to choose Dependent Document as the document type.
  • Click Save Document button.

Note: If you cannot upload the documents, scan/email them to benefits@unc.edu. Be sure to include your name and PID.

You will need to upload documentation for any new dependents added to your health insurance with the State Health Plan.

See the list below for acceptable forms of documentation for adding a dependent.

  • For spouse and/or child/ren | 1040 Tax Form (if dependents are listed on it)

OR

  • For spouse | Marriage certificate AND a shared utility bill/rental agreement/mortgage
  • For child/ren | Birth certificate/s

With a birth or adoption, you will need to upload documentation before you’re able to add your child to your benefit plans.

  • If a birth: The hospital will usually provide you with a Verification of Facts document that details the birth.
  • If an adoption: Use the adoption paperwork/forms detailing this event.

Remember to add your child’s Social Security number once it is available.

 


How do I edit my dependents?

You can edit your dependents via ConnectCarolina Self Service during open enrollment or with a life event.

Before you can add a dependent to your insurance plans in the State Enrollment Portal and/or the University System Enrollment Portal, you will need to upload your documentation of a life event or dependent verification. With a birth or adoption, remember to add your child’s Social Security number once it is available. See instructions for how to upload benefits documentation.

During open enrollment or with a life event, you can update health insurance coverage for your dependents in ConnectCarolina Self Service through the State Enrollment Portal:

  • Log in to ConnectCarolina Self Service with your Onyen and password and DUO verification.
  • Click the My Benefits tile.
  • Click Benefits Enrollment from left menu.
  • Select State Enrollment Portal from left drop-down menu.
    • For a life event:
      • Click Have you experienced a life change?
      • Select the appropriate life event.
    • During open enrollment:
      • Check, uncheck or add your dependents.
During open enrollment or with a life event, you can update plan coverage in ConnectCarolina Self Service through the UNC System Enrollment Portal for:

  • Dental
  • Vision
  • Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D)
  • Cancer & Specified Illness
  • Critical Illness
  • Group Term Life
  • Accident

To add or edit a dependent during open enrollment or a life event:

  • Log in to ConnectCarolina Self Service with your Onyen and password and DUO verification.
  • Click the My Benefits tile.
  • Click Benefits Enrollment from left menu.
  • Select UNC System Enrollment Portal from left drop-down menu.
  • A new tab will automatically open up to the UNC System Benefits Portal page.
  • Click drop-down arrow for the Main Menu to the right of the menu bar at the top of the page.
  • Click Your Beneficiaries under the Your Profile section.
  • Scroll down to view your current beneficiary designations.
  • To make changes, click the blue Add/Edit Beneficiaries button.

 


How do I designate my beneficiaries?

You can designate beneficiaries via ConnectCarolina Self Service any time during the year.

How to designate beneficiaries

  • Log in to ConnectCarolina Self Service with your Onyen and password and DUO verification.
  • Click the My Benefits tile.
  • Click Benefits Enrollment from left menu.
  • Select UNC System Enrollment Portal from left drop-down menu.
  • A new tab will automatically open up to the UNC System Benefits Portal page.
  • Click drop-down arrow for the Main Menu to the right of the menu bar at the top of the page.
  • Click Your Beneficiaries under the Your Profile section.
  • Scroll down to view your current beneficiary designations.
  • To make changes, click the blue Add/Edit Beneficiaries button.
You may be able to change beneficiaries using the North Carolina Retirement Systems online web portal—ORBIT. Follow the instructions on the Beneficiaries page of the North Carolina Retirement Systems website to make beneficiary changes.

 


How do I change my supplemental retirement contributions (403b and/or 457b)?

You can make changes to your supplemental retirement contributions via ConnectCarolina Self Service during open enrollment or with a life event.

If want to change your contributions to your supplement retirement plans or if you want to start or stop you plan, you can quickly and easily update your 403b or 457b information online at your convenience in ConnectCarolina.

  • Log in to ConnectCarolina Self Service with your Onyen and password and DUO verification.
  • Click the My Benefits tile.
  • Click Benefits Enrollment on the left menu.
  • Click Supplemental Retirement Plan from the drop-down menu.
  • Scroll to the very bottom of the page and click Continue to Enrollment (this allows you to start/stop/change election amounts).

In the new screen, you can change your 403b and 457b contributions simply by entering a new figure into the amount field, which will overwrite and automatically replace whatever contributions were previously in place.

Note: You may not see the changes reflected immediately, depending on when during the payroll cycle you enter your changes.
