Vacation Leave
Vacation Leave is the vacation leave for SHRA employees. Review the Vacation Leave for SHRA Employees policy for more information. If you have additional questions, please email leave@unc.edu.
Permanent, probationary, and time-limited SHRA employees who work 20 or more hours per week earn Vacation Leave according to the chart below.

SHRA employees who work less than 40 hours per week earn leave on a prorated basis.
- Manager approval required prior to use.
- Upon using requested leave hours, enter leave hours in TIM in ConnectCarolina Self Service on the corresponding timesheet.
- Vacation Leave accrues on a monthly basis.
- Employees may carry forward up to 30 days/240 hours of unused Vacation Leave into the next year; all Vacation Leave in excess of 240 hours at the end of the year automatically converts to Sick Leave, effective Jan. 1 of the following year.
You can view your leave accrual balances in TIM on your timecard in ConnectCarolina Self Service.
- Upon separation from state service: Up to 30 days/240 hours of an employee’s Vacation Leave balance will be paid out (prorated for part-time employees).
- If an employee receives a new appointment within the University: All Vacation Leave retained will transfer to the new appointment.
- If an employee transfers to an eligible EHRA position at another UNC System institution: Up to 30 days/240 hours of an employee’s Vacation Leave balance will be paid out (prorated for part-time employees).
- If an employee transfers to an eligible SHRA position at another UNC System institution: Up to 30 days/240 hours of an employee’s Vacation Leave balance will transfer (prorated for part-time employees).
- Upon retirement: The employee may request to exhaust Vacation Leave or to receive a lump sum payment up to 240 hours of Vacation Leave balance.
- Employees may donate Vacation Leave and forfeited Vacation Leave to employees who have been approved to receive donations under the University’s Voluntary Shared Leave Program.
