For benefit purposes, a change in employment status means moving from one benefit eligibility category to another. This usually involves a change from ineligibility to eligibility or vice versa, part-time to full-time employment (20 – 29 hours per week to 30+ hours per week) or from SHRA to EHRA status.
Employment status changes cause a new 30-day window to open during which conditional changes to benefit plans may be made (depending on the type of status change). The 30-day window begins with the effective date of the change. Employees are encouraged to contact a Benefits Consultant as soon as possible for instructions and information about making changes.
Likewise, if a change occurs to an employee’s spouse, then the employee may be eligible to make changes to some benefit plans (check with a Benefits Consultant for further details). Employees who change from an ineligible to an eligible status may be required to attend New Employee Orientation.
Eligibility to participate in the State Health Plan for permanent employees begins at 20 or more hours per week. Permanent part-time employees who work between 20-29 hours per week are eligible for coverage, but are not eligible for the University contribution and pay 100 percent of the cost of coverage.Permanent full-time employees who work 30 or more hours per week are eligible for coverage and the University pays 100 percent of employee-only coverage. Permanent full-time employees can also elect dependent coverage at group rates
.NCFlex benefits are available to permanent employees who work at least 20 hours per week. In general, a status change between full and part time (or vice versa) does not impact your NC Flex benefit elections.
Employees must complete the change online to add or remove coverage. All changes must be processed using the benefits enrollment system (Log into ConnectCarolina –>Click on Self Service –> Click BENEFITS ENROLLMENT).
You may add or drop coverage under the University’s Group Term Life Plan (MetLife) and/or AD&D Plan (Reliance Standard) at any time. You will need to complete the appropriate forms to add or drop coverage. Please visit the Benefits Forms section of this website and navigate to Insurance Forms.
Complete the MetLife and/or Reliance Standard forms and return them to the Benefits Services Department’s Campus Box—CB# 1045.
Employees working 30 or more hours per week are eligible for supplemental long-term disability coverage through either Lincoln Financial or the Standard. Newly eligible SHRA employees will be granted a 30-day enrollment window and newly eligible Faculty and EHRA Non-faculty will be granted a 60 day enrollment window. Please visit the Benefits Forms
section of this website and navigate to Insurance Forms. Complete the Lincoln Financial or Standard form and return it to the Benefits Services Department’s Campus Box—CB# 1045.
If an employee’s hours are reduced below 30 hour per week, coverage will end the first of the month following the status change date.
Retirement plan participation is mandatory for permanent employees who work 30 or more hours per week.
Permanent full-time SHRA employees will automatically be enrolled in the Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System (TSERS).
Faculty and EHRA Non-faculty are granted a 60 day window to select either the Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System (TSERS) or the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP). Once the choice of retirement system is made, the election is irrevocable. Failure to select and enroll in a specific plan will result in default enrollment into the Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System. Contact your Benefits Consultant to review you retirement program eligibility.
Employees who experience a status change to below 30 hours per week will cease retirement program participation.
Employees who become ineligible for coverage will receive COBRA, continuation or portability information directly from the benefit plan vendor.
