Open Enrollment
Open Enrollment is the annual opportunity for benefits-eligible UNC-Chapel Hill staff and faculty to make changes to their benefit plans outside of a qualifying life event such as a change in your employment or marital status.
The next open enrollment period will take place in October 2025. At that time, check back here for everything you need to know about open enrollment — what’s new for the next year’s benefits, how to make your selections in the enrollment portals ConnectCarolina and the plan options for health, life and other insurances available to you as a Carolina employee.
Are you a new employee?
New University employees can find information about your available benefits plans and how to enroll in them on the Your Benefits at UNC-Chapel Hill page of our new employee website, Welcome to Carolina Blue.
Experiencing a life event?
With a life event, you will update your benefits coverage using the two enrollment portals in ConnectCarolina Self Service. The process of updating your benefits coverage in the two ConnectCarolina portals is called adding a life event. These are the same portals you use each year during open enrollment. Click the button link below for step-by-step instructions for adding a life event in each portal:

State Enrollment Portal for health insurance with the State Health Plan.

UNC System Enrollment Portal for all other insurance and illness plans.
How do I update other benefits information?
You can update your name and address, designate your beneficiaries, upload documentation and take care of other benefits-related items in ConnectCarolina Service any time of year — outside of open enrollment and without a life event. Click the link below to view step-by-instructions.
