– Amy Johnson, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs

“As we celebrate our staff today, I’m reminded of something that Dr. Martin Luther King said many years ago: “Whatever your life’s work is, do it well. A man should do his job so well that the living, the dead, and the unborn could do it no better.” Although this quote is dated (with reference only to “a man”), it summarizes the commitment, persistence and resilience our staff have shown over these many difficult months. Thank you, colleagues for caring about our institution, our students and each other. I am honored and grateful to work with you.”

– Suzanne Barbour, Dean, The Graduate School

“In the context of another incredibly challenging year, I want to thank you for all you do for the Gillings School and the University. Many of you have had to juggle many roles — as children, parents, and members of communities and organizations, in addition to being employees. Some of you have lost family members and friends to COVID-19. I empathize deeply with your losses. Despite all the stressors, you have shown up for your jobs with remarkable persistence, goodwill, flexibility and quality. Thank you.”

“Employee Appreciation Day is a very special opportunity to pause and reflect on the numerous ways that UNC’s employees make it a joy to work here. The staff camaraderie and pride assure that Carolina is a terrific campus beloved by students, faculty and the wider community. The UNC staff are a force for equity and caring. Throughout this pandemic, Carolina’s employees have kept us safe and healed us, when possible. My gratitude is deep and I hope all of our employees know how precious they are to the University. Please hear our profound appreciation! THANK YOU!”

– Ronald Strauss, Executive Vice Provost

“Without the diligent work of our UNC staff, the university would grind to an abrupt halt. Paychecks vanish. Our methods of receiving information would be delayed–websites would not be updated and informational emails would remain in draft form. We would all go hungry while on campus. I could envision sheep roaming on Polk Place in order to “mow” the grass. Our Tar Heels on the football field and volleyball court would have to wash their own uniforms. Malfunctioning computers would languish in the Help Desk pit. UNC libraries would lock their doors and digital access would cease. Campus buildings would quickly be awash in grim; overflowing trash cans will block rooms.
Thank you, UNC employees!”

– Sherry Salyer, Interim Dean, UNC Summer School

“There are so many stories from this year of employees who stepped outside of their areas to support our work, helping labs update protocols to focus on COVID research, supporting our learners as they worked to navigate virtual learning, updating our facilities and creating safe spaces to gather and just eat lunch outdoors. These acts have all made a huge difference in our work, and I’m so thankful to the colleagues who went above and beyond this year to support us in our mission and care for each other.”

– Dr. Cristy Page, Executive Dean, UNC School of Medicine

“All of us at Lineberger wanted to extend our appreciation for each of our staff. There were so many barriers over the last 12 months both professionally and personally. You struggled through zoom fatigue, reported on site during a pandemic, cared for loved ones, fought the loneliness of quarantine, or anguished over the news. However, you continued to be productive and positive, you found new ways to communicate and build relationships. You kept the Cancer Center moving forward. We wanted to thank you for that. We can’t begin to fully understand or know about everything you do on a daily basis that keeps this place running but we do recognize that staff and your work is a driving force of the Center’s success.”

– Wendy Sarratt, Associate Director UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center
