Mental Health First Aid teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders. This virtual two day (6 hour) training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care.

This course will be led by Mental Health First Aid instructors, Kate Thieda, Director of Student Wellness in Adams School of Dentistry and Alicia Freeman, Mental Health Awareness Coordinator in the Office of Student Wellness and is sponsored by UNC-CH School of Social Work.

This course covers:

  • Common signs and symptoms of mental illness
  • Common signs and symptoms of substance use
  • How to interact with a person in crisis
  • How to connect the person with help
  • NEW: Expanded content on trauma, addiction and self-care

Before you register, know that each participant must complete a 2-hour self-paced online course before participating in the virtual training July 12th and 13th.

PLEASE NOTE: If you register for the MHFA training your seat in the course is being covered via federal grant funding through UNC-CH School of Social Work. If you sign up and choose not to participate, then we have lost funding for that seat which another individual could have used. This is an amazing opportunity to receive an international training and certification at no cost to you.

**Space is limited. If you register for this training, please commit to completing the 2-hr pre-work and attend the full sessions on both July 12th and 13th from 1 pm – 4 pm.**

To register, complete the registration form by Wednesday, June 30, 2021.
