[Linc Butler, Associate Vice Chancellor of Human Resources and Academic Personnel for UNC-Chapel Hill]
Hi, I’m Linc Butler, senior associate vice chancellor for human resources and academic personnel. I’d like to talk with you about performance at UNC-Chapel Hill and how it supports you throughout your career here at UNC.
At Carolina, performance is about connection, growth, and celebrating what makes this community extraordinary—you. It’s a year-round partnership between employees and managers to set clear expectations, celebrate progress, and have meaningful conversations. It’s about helping you grow in your role and ensuring you feel supported in the important work you do each day.
Every spring, our annual performance process provides an additional opportunity to reflect on accomplishments and plan for what’s ahead.
So, what does that look like for you?
It starts with self-assessment and reflecting on the past year to share what you’re proud of and highlight your wins and then moves to a time of planning when you and your manager work together to set goals towards the areas where you’d like to grow.
For managers, it also includes the thoughtful completion of your appraisals and the conversations you have with your employees, giving you the opportunity to recognize your team’s successes and provide meaningful feedback. This process strengthens trust and connection and lays the foundation for an engaged and motivated team.
But performance doesn’t stop here. It’s not just a task or an annual checklist; it’s the ongoing feedback, regular check-ins, and honest conversations that make all the difference.
Because at its heart, performance at UNC is about creating a space where we all feel valued in the work we do, helping every member of our community grow and succeed and build a stronger, more vibrant Carolina — together.
