Twelve-Month Faculty

Twelve-month faculty earn 12 sick days per year accrued on a monthly basis.

Unused sick leave may be accumulated and carried forward from year to year on an unlimited basis.

Eligibility

For the purposes of using sick leave, “immediate family” will refer to the following relations:

  • Self (employee)
  • Spouse (husband or wife)
  • Parent (biological, adoptive, or person who stood-in as “parent”)
  • Child (biological, adopted, legal ward, foster care, or person for whom employee stands-in as “parent”)
  • Sister or Brother (biological or adoptive)
  • Grandparents
  • Great-Grandparents
  • Grandchildren
  • Great-Grandchildren
  • Step-, Half-, and In-law relations of the above
  • Other dependents living in the household

Sick leave may be used by an employee for:

  • Recovery from personal illness, injury, or disability that prevents the performance of usual duties
  • Illness or injury of a member of an employee’s immediate family or other dependents living in the household
  • Temporary disability associated with childbirth
  • Adoption of a child (limited to a maximum of 240 hours (30 days) for each parent)
  • Medical or dental appointments for the employee or members of the immediate family
  • Donations to a member of the immediate family who is approved to receive Voluntary Shared Leave
  • Death of a member of an employee’s immediate family or of other dependents who lived in the employee’s household
Upon separation, unused sick leave is not paid out.

Only members of TSERS are eligible to have sick leave credit converted to creditable service upon retirement.

For ORP participants: Any unused sick leave balance at termination or retirement is forfeited.

When reinstated to State service
Sick leave is restored to an employee’s leave record when the employee is reinstated to State service within five years of any type of separation, including within five years after separating from EHRA employment with a local government, public school, community college or technical institute.

Eligible faculty members who earn sick and vacation leave and who need leave for family and medical leave related reasons must use paid serious illness before using accrued leave. The type of accrued leave an employee may use for family and medical leave related reasons depends on the reason for leave. For more information, see “Leave Charge Options” section on the Family & Medical Leave Act (FMLA) policy.

For more information, see the Faculty Serious Illness & Parental Leave webpage.
