Get REAL & HEEL supports cancer survivors & caregivers

Today, an estimated 3 million women are living with breast cancer — more than ever before in our history. Since the mid-1970s, spectacular progress has been made in breast cancer early screening, treatment and prevention due to research to develop, test and use new approaches. This October, take action: Get screened.

Get REAL & HEEL is a unique program within the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Support Program (CCSP) that is designed to serve cancer patients throughout North Carolina.

See below for the many CCSP services that support cancer survivors and their caregivers:

Get REAL & HEEL
This program offers an ongoing 12-week exercise program free for any cancer survivor from point of diagnosis to years of remission. Classes are held in-person in Chapel Hill and Rex or virtually via Zoom. All participants also gain access to the media library, if unable to attend live classes.

Walk to Wellness
October 4 – November 25 | Wednesdays, 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 9 a.m.

A free 8-week walking group that meets weekly in partnership between UNC Get REAL & HEEL and Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation. Join the group for a low-intensity outdoor walk. Open to all cancer survivors and their caregivers. The group meets at Bolin Creek Trail–Chapel Hill Community Center. Sign up for Walk to Wellness!

Healing Yoga
Via Zoom M-T-Th-F, 10-11:30 a.m. | in-person at Get REAL & HEEL Wednesdays, 10-11:30 a.m.

A slow-paced, deeply relaxing class for all people touched by cancer and their caregivers. People of all fitness levels welcome, including beginner and experienced yoga students.

Virtual Lunch and Learn with Melissa Holt
Tuesday, October 10, noon

Join survivorship coordinator with UNC Lineberger’s Comprehensive Cancer Center, Melissa Holt, DNP, PMHNP-BC, MSW. Her role within the Comprehensive Cancer Support Program is to provide psychiatric medication management and psychotherapy for patients receiving care at the UNC hospital. Defender-cise
October 10 – November 14, 4 p.m.

A free 6-week tai chi and self-defense-inspired class designed to integrate balance, strength and stability with relaxed, slow-paced movement. Class is open to anyone with a diagnosis of cancer and their caregivers.

Stronger Together
October 19, 6:30-8 p.m.

For people affected by cancer, this wellness-minded community meets monthly on the third Thursdays of each month in-person and via Zoom.
