The UNC System Office Employee Engagement Survey is the only system-wide survey on workplace satisfaction. It provides a common dataset for the entire UNC System and supports the UNC System Strategic Plan goal to foster diverse and excellent institutions. The survey aims to gain clearer measures of success to further the recruitment, retention and development of the most talented workforce possible — both as a system and on campus.

The UNC System is to committed to providing a quality work environment for staff and faculty and to preparing to meet the changing needs of its constituent campuses. The survey data helps gauge staff and faculty engagement, address ongoing challenges, build a stronger community and enhance the overall experience of employees.

 

About the 2024 Survey

2024 Survey

The University of North Carolina System Office will launch the fourth iteration of its system-wide employee engagement survey project on Monday, March 25, 2024. The survey will run through April 8.

The UNC System Office Employee Engagement Survey is administered online through a third-party vendor, ModernThink LLC, an independent research and consulting firm that specializes in higher education and also administers the Great Colleges to Work For survey on behalf of the Chronicle for Higher Education.

The 2024 survey is a shortened version of the full survey administered in 2018 and 2020 but slightly longer than the “pulse” survey conducted in 2022. The 42-question survey includes two open-ended questions for write-in responses and demographic questions, such as years of service, salary range, gender and race, for reporting purposes.

The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete.

The 2024 survey asks about:

  • Collaboration, Communication and Work Environment
  • Confidence in Senior Leadership and Supervisors/Department Chair Effectiveness
  • Faculty and Staff Well-being and Faculty Experience
  • Job Satisfaction, Mission and Pride
  • Performance Management and Professional Development

Eligibility

The UNC System Office Employee Engagement Survey goes to permanent full-time (75% time or more) faculty and staff employed with the University as of Jan. 31, 2024. Student employees, temporary employees and UNC Health employees are NOT eligible to take the survey and will not receive an email.

If you do not see a survey email invitation in your inbox, it may be that your UNC Outlook email settings filtered the message to a different folder; be sure to check your Spam and Other folders for an email from surveys@modernthink.net.

If the focused inbox setting is turned on in Outlook, the survey email invitation may not appear in your inbox.

To locate the survey email invitation, search “ModernThink” in the Outlook search box.

 

 

Taking the Survey

You will receive a survey email invitation directly from ModernThink LLC, the independent firm administering the survey. The email contains details about the survey and a unique login and password that only you can use to participate in the survey. The sender email address is surveys@modernthink.net.

The survey should take about 10 minutes to complete, and you should be able to access the survey on a PC, tablet or phone. You may complete it on work time.

Survey participation is voluntary, though we hope you choose to participate. Please share your honest feedback and know that your responses will remain anonymous.

We appreciate the time our staff and faculty took to complete the previous surveys, and we will continue to evaluate our programs, policies and processes to ensure we meet the high standards we all have for UNC.

 

 

Confidentiality

Individual responses are confidential. The UNC System Office and individual campuses present aggregate survey results, which may be disaggregated by certain demographics (e.g., unit, employee type, race, gender).

ModernThink is the only entity that can access or view raw survey data and individual responses; the UNC System Office and the constituent UNC institutions do not have access to any raw data.

Only ModernThink will have access to individual employee responses so that results cannot be connected back to individuals.
