Lori Haight | School of Information & Library Science

Serving as a Wellness Champion since the start of this worksite wellness initiative in the fall of 2019, Lori Haight from the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) has recruited a small wellness committee that continues to meet to create a greater culture of wellbeing within the workplace, whether in person or virtually.

This past spring semester, the SILS wellness committee hosted a “Month of Wellness” as part of the school’s 90th Anniversary celebration. The committee invited students, faculty and staff to participate in 10 events over four weeks. Most of these events were virtual and ranged from uploading healthy recipes to sharing photos of them being active with their pet to attending virtual webinars and Tai Chi classes.

Participants were encouraged to register their activity using an electronic entry form, and each entry counted as a chance to win prizes such as Apple Airpods or Samsung Galaxy Buds, UNC men’s basketball tickets, free classes at local health clubs and more. Winners were randomly selected at the end of the month.

Of the Month of Wellness, Lori says, “We were excited to see participation from students, faculty and staff, and plan to continue to offer these activities in future semesters. Our goal is to increase the number of in-person events while still having several virtual options.”

The wellness committee’s efforts within the School of Information and Library Science don’t stop at wellness: To show appreciation to employees, the committee also holds Spirit Days to recognize employees with birthday celebrations, potlucks, whiteboard cards and door decorations.

Thank you, Lori, for dedicating time to bring people together and including wellness in the workplace!
