The University recognizes and expresses appreciation for the long-term service of faculty and staff, both full-time and part-time (regularly scheduled to work 20 or more hours each week).

Eligibility for awards is determined by an employee’s Total State Service according to the University’s fiscal year, July 1 through June 30. The program currently recognizes employee service at five-year intervals.

To recognize five years of Total State Service, employees receive a frame-able certificate bearing the employee’s name and years of service. The certificate is presented by the employee’s supervisor on or near the employee’s anniversary date. The certificate is presented by the department head on or near the employee’s anniversary date at an appropriate departmental ceremony.
Employees with 10 years of Total State Service date receive a frame-able certificate bearing the employee’s name and years of service. Along with the certificate, employees receive a roll-up stadium blanket with The University of North Carolina logo. The certificate and blanket are presented by the School or Division on or near the employee’s anniversary date.
Employees with 15 years of Total State Service receive a frame-able certificate bearing the employee’s name and years of service. In addition, employees receive a paperweight with the University’s logo presented by the School or Division on or near the employee’s anniversary date.
Employees with 20 years of Total State Service receive an invitation to attend the 20-Year Service Appreciation Banquet. The employee is presented with a personalized engraved plaque and is inducted into the Carolina 20-Year Society. This dinner is held once a year in the Spring.
After an employee is inducted into the 20-Year Carolina, they continue to be recognized at each five year interval (i.e., 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 etc.). The Benefits Office will invite employees to attend an Annual Service Appreciation Event. At this event employees are recognized and awarded a glass trophy etched with the service award year they are celebrating.

Five, 10, 15 Year Awards
During the spring of each year, Benefits Services generates a list of employees who will reach their 5, 10, or 15 year service dates in the upcoming fiscal year. Benefits Services sends this list to the HR Officer at the School / Division level  to confirm the correct service dates, department affiliation, and spelling of the awardees’ names. After receiving eligibility verification, Benefits Services purchases the appropriate number of awards. HR officers will be informed when the service awards are ready for pick-up. The awards are broken into two distribution times: July and January.

Twenty, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 Year Awards
During the winter of each year, Benefits Services generates a list of employees who have reached their 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, and 50 year service dates in the current fiscal year. Benefits Services sends this list to the HR Officer at the School / Division level to confirm the correct service dates, department affiliation, and spelling of the awardees’ names. After receiving eligibility verification, Benefits Services purchases the appropriate number of awards and coordinates invitations and arrangements for the Service Appreciation Banquet, to be held once yearly in the spring.

This service credit is the grand total of all permanent, probationary, and trainee time, either full-time or part-time (regularly scheduled 20 hours or more each work week), that an employee has served in State government or other recognized public sector systems. This type of service does not have to be continuous; however, breaks in service are not counted in the computation for credit.
