Performance appraisals are an opportunity to reflect on accomplishments and plan for the future. Going forward, all performance tasks will be completed in Carolina Talent —and that means no more paper forms! When a task is available to you, you’ll receive email notifications and reminders.

Self-Assessment

From March 15 through March 31, you’ll have an opportunity to complete an optional self-assessment through the My Appraisal Task in Carolina Talent. On the self-assessment you can:

  • Describe your accomplishments for this review period.
  • Describe your performance on this review period’s individual and institutional goals.
  • Add self-assessment questions assigned by your manager.
  • Include any other information you want your manager to take into consideration when assessing your performance for this review period.
  • Upload awards and certifications.

The optional self-assessment will be due March 31, which means you’ll have two weeks to complete it.

During those two weeks, you can make changes to your answers even if you’ve already submitted them. Just be sure to click the submit button again or the system will keep your previous submittal.

Be aware that after March 31, if the self-assessment was not previously submitted, any answers saved as a draft will automatically be submitted, even if you did not click the Submit button.

After March 31, the self-assessment will no longer be available.
 

Additional new features

We’ve also added a few other upgrades to the process this:

  • Managers will complete appraisal reviews and annual Employee Competency Assessments online.
  • A comments field has been added to the development plan so employees can add comments to their development plan throughout the year.
  • SHRA and EHRA Non-Faculty employees are now on the same performance timeline.

 

Reminders

Here are additional reminders for performance management season:

  • Employees and managers can add progress updates to goals and development plans.
  • Managers can review all goals in Carolina Talent to make sure they are up to date since these will be used in the appraisal.
  • All employees should have 3-5 individual goals to rate.
  • Managers can consider additional questions for the employee to answer during the self-assessment.

Carolina Talent creates performance tasks based on reporting structures, and everyone can verify that these reporting relationships are correct by viewing your contact card in Outlook and checking the Organization section. If your manager or direct reports need to be updated, work with your HR Representative make changes.

Key dates

Important dates related to performance management are listed on the Performance Management Help page of the HR at UNC website. Additionally, managers will receive an email on March 31 with information specific to performance tasks that will launch for managers on April 1.
 

Resources

Whether you’re an employee or a manager, multiple resources are available to help you with the performance review process.

Office hours will be available via Zoom starting March 22 and running through the month of April. Hour-long sessions will be held Tuesdays at 2 p.m. and Wednesdays at 1 p.m.

  • Go to help.unc.edu.
  • Click Login in the top right corner.
  • Search for Carolina Talent in the How can we help you? field.
  • Select Carolina Talent to Request this Service.
  • Complete the form and click the blue Request button on the right.
